While the Naz Foundation International was formally registered as a not-for-profit charity and limited company in August 1996, its gestation really began in July 1988, when Shivananda Khan developed SHAKTI, the first lesbian and gay organisation in the UK for South Asians. This eventually lead to The Naz Project in October 1991, an HIV service organisation for South Asians in London , with a strong focus on the needs of MSM. The Naz Foundation International emerged from this.
In 2006, NFI celebrated its 10 th anniversary, and as a part of that celebration, a 10 year photo profile was developed as an exhibition in Lucknow , India , where NFI's regional office is based.
